8’D If you can’t tell, Natsume bought back his parents’ home. I guess Madara and him split up along the way somewhere, but Natsume managed to return all the names and waited for Madara to find him again. He eventually did, and Natsume gave him the Book of Friends. Seeing Madara express regret that the thing he came to get had no purpose anymore, Natsume decided to write his own name into the book as a sort of lasting reminder of their friendship. (He’s an old man, so I guess we can assume Natsume knows he’ll be gone soon.) Either the book glows or Madara has a hand in it, but Natsume is transformed into a youkai and returned to the age that we’re familiar with. Annnd it’s happily ever after with the spirits Natsume made friends with.

*the phrase was more like “brandished my pretenses at you”, kind of that “pretending that everything is okay but knowing that it’s not, my feelings have grown to the point where I can’t hide them anymore but I have to so you won’t worry but I’ve already decided that I won’t meet you anymore because I care too much for you so this will be the last time” but then the summer festival happened and we all grossly sobbed for perfect OTP
